Padres pitcher Andrew Cashner cut a tendon in his right thumb during a hunting accident and probably will start the season on the disabled list.
Padres general manager Josh Byrnes said Cashner was injured by a hunting partner while they were trimming a carcass and that the 26-year-old right-hander sustained a small cut and had surgery on the punctured tendon.
Also in major-league hunting news: On Tuesday, Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum said he was OK after former teammate Robin Yount accidentally shot him in the right ear and back with pellets during a recent quail hunt in Arizona.
CHEEK WINS FRICK AWARD
Former Toronto Blue Jays announcer Tom Cheek has won the Ford C. Frick Award for excellence in baseball broadcasting.
The Baseball Hall of Fame announced the award on Wednesday.
Cheek called the first 4,306 regular-season and 41 postseason games in the Blue Jays’ history, starting in 1977. He died in 2005.
Dave Niehaus, the late Seattle Mariners announcer, won the award in 2008.

The Braves have exercised their 2014 option on the contract of manager Fredi Gonzalez.
Atlanta also hired Dave Holliday and Brad Sloan as special assistants to general manager Frank Wren and major league scouts.

National League Championship Series MVP second baseman Marco Scutaro signed a $20 million, three-year contract late Tuesday to stay with the Giants. Also, the team exercised 2014 contract options on manager Bruce Bochy and GM Brian Sabean. … Former Rays infielder Jeff Keppinger has reached an agreement with the White Sox on a $12 million, three-year contract, said a person speaking on condition of anonymity Wednesday because there was no announcement by the team. … The Tigers traded left-hander Andy Oliver straight across to the Pirates for catcher Ramon Cabrera. … Free agent outfielder Nate McLouth rejoined the Orioles for a one-year contract worth $2 million, according to a person familiar with the deal. … The Diamondbacks agreed to terms with infielder Eric Chavez on a $3 million, one-year contract, a person with knowledge of the talks said. … Left-handed reliever Randy Choate and the Cardinals have agreed to a $7.5 million, three-year contract, according to a person familiar with the negotiations. … A person familiar with the talks said pitcher Jeff Francis has agree to a one-year contract to stay with the Rockies.
