Pure choral bliss

You don’t have to pay big bucks to hear beautiful Christmas music this season. Local churches always are good sources for free concerts, and at this time of the year, they have plenty of great music to choose from, with choir, organ and often soloists to immerse you in peace and beauty.

You don’t have to pay big bucks to hear beautiful Christmas music this season. Local churches always are good sources for free concerts, and at this time of the year, they have plenty of great music to choose from, with choir, organ and often soloists to immerse you in peace and beauty.

All of these free concerts happen this weekend:

Christ Episcopal Church presents its annual Advent Lessons & Carols on Sunday. A tradition going back to early 20th-century England, the service alternates Biblical and other readings with choir and congregational carols, and organ music to boot. This year, the theme is “Peace and Felicity,” with works by Morten Lauridsen, C. V. Stanford, Philip Stopford, Herbert Brewer and Donald Pearson. Advent Lessons & Carols begins at 5 p.m. Sunday at the church, 310 N. K St., Tacoma. ccptacoma.org.

The South Sound Classical Choir sings Christmas music at two churches this year, offering Tacoma and Milton audiences the chance to hear them. The Milton concert is at 8 p.m. today at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, 2306 Milton Way. sscc.valleyartssociety.org. The Tacoma concert is at 3 p.m. Sunday at Mason United Methodist Church, 2714 N. Madison St. sscc.valleyartssociety.org.

In Puyallup, you can hear the Tapestry Singers at Pilgrim Lutheran Church at 3 p.m. Sunday. The church is at 10510 136th St. E. Admission is by freewill donation. 253-572-4018, valleyartsunited.org.
