Major League Soccer will hold the first phase of its re-entry draft today, a process that allows clubs to select players whose contracts were declined by their previous teams.
Because the drafting teams also must accept the player’s existing contract, this has historically been a lightly used portion of the MLS player-allocation process. The draft will take place by conference call starting at noon.
Teams have been more active in the second phase of the re-entry draft, which allows teams to renegotiate contracts of selected players. That stage is set for Dec. 14.
On Thursday, the league also announced these key offseason dates:
• MLS’ player scouting combine will be held Jan. 11-15 at Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
• The two rounds of the 2013 SuperDraft will be held Jan. 17 at Indianapolis.
• The four-round Supplemental Draft is set for Jan. 22 by conference call.
