A teenager was shot in the abdomen during an attempted robbery in a west Olympia parking lot shortly after midnight Saturday.
Olympia police officers were called to an apartment complex in the 1300 block of Fern Street S.W. where they found a 16-year-old boy with a gunshot wound and the alleged shooter being held down by teenagers, according to a news release.
The 16-year-old was taken to Providence St. Peter Hospital where he is expected to make a full recovery.
The incident began after four teens were approached by a 29-year-old transient who frequents the Olympia area, according to Det. Sgt. Aaron Jelcick.
The 29-year-old allegedly had a hand gun and demanded the teen's belongings and their car.
The 16-year-old tried to stop the man from taking the car, which had two teenage girls inside.
"He went hands on with the subject," Jelcick said.
The 16-year-old was shot during the struggle. No one else was hurt. The other teens were able to subdue the alleged shooter until police arrived, the release said.
"(The suspect) is a known criminal and has criminal history," Jelcick said.
The 29-year-old was booked in Thurston County Jail on first-degree robbery and second-degree assault.
