The San Francisco 49ers suspended running back Brandon Jacobs on Monday for the final three games following a series of posts on social media sites addressing his lack of playing time, including one during the weekend saying he was “on this team rotting away.”
The 49ers made the announcement about two hours after coach Jim Harbaugh’s news conference, but provided no explanation for why Jacobs had been disciplined. It is doubtful he would return for the playoffs.
On Monday night, Jacobs posted on Twitter: “Thank you all for all your support, I am doing wonderful it’s not a big deal things happen, I am strong enough to get through this, again thank all of you for your support. (hash tag)IWILLBEBACK.”
Harbaugh on Monday declined to address Jacobs’ earlier comments, even when asked whether Jacobs was still on the team. He said he was invoking his “Fifth amendment” right.
GRIFFIN III’S KNEE NOT BAD
All the medical terms associated with Robert Griffin III’s knee injury can be boiled down to one message: It’s not too bad.
Beyond that, there are still some very important unknowns.
The NFL’s top-rated quarterback might or might not play Sunday when the Washington Redskins visit the Cleveland Browns.
Coach Mike Shanahan, knowing full well that it makes the other team work extra to prepare for two quarterbacks, will no doubt wait as long as possible to publicly commit one way or the other to Griffin or fellow rookie Kirk Cousins.
“Both of them will have a game plan,” Shanahan said Monday.
BILLS’ FRED JACKSON OUT
Buffalo Bills running back Fred Jackson will miss the remainder of the season, which includes this Sunday’s game against the Seattle Seahawks in Toronto, with a sprained ligament in his right knee.
Coach Chan Gailey provided the update on Monday saying Jackson is expected to miss from three-five weeks. And that won’t be enough time to recover considering the Bills (5-8) have only three games remaining and have all but mathematically been eliminated from playoff contention.

Ex-NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue will rule this afternoon on the latest round of player appeals in the NFL’s bounty probe, and any potential punishment will be delayed by a week, a person familiar with the decision said. … Cam Cameron was fired Monday as offensive coordinator of the Ravens. Quarterbacks coach Jim Caldwell will assume Cameron’s duties. … Jaguars coach Mike Mularkey was released from the hospital Monday afternoon after showing up at the facility after his team’s 17-10 loss to the Jets. The team offered few details about his illness. … The Cardinals claimed QB Brian Hoyer off waivers from the Steelers. … The Raiders reinstated LB Rolando McClain from the suspended list and cut starting CB Ron Bartell in the team’s latest roster shake-up. … Chiefs WR Dwayne Bowe will miss this Sunday’s game at Oakland with a rib injury, and could be out for the rest of the season.
