A shooting prompted by an alcohol-fueled argument left one man dead and a woman injured early Tuesday, Tacoma police said.
Detectives interviewed the alleged shooter but did not arrest him because the incident could have been self-defense, police spokesman Mark Fulghum said.
Officers were called to a parking lot in the 6200 block of McKinley Avenue after several 911 calls to report gunshots. Police found six people in a vehicle that had crashed into a fence after the shooting, which started more than a block away.
“It sounds like they’d been drinking all day,” Fulghum said of the six. “A couple of them were arguing back and forth and it came to a head when they were on their way to drop somebody off.”
A man in the backseat allegedly opened fire, shooting a man in the head and a woman in the buttocks. The man, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman was taken to a hospital and expected to survive.
The alleged shooter and the victim both had guns but it’s unclear whether the victim fired his gun or threatened anyone in the vehicle, Fulghum said.
