SANTA RUNS TACOMA

What: Santa Runs Tacoma offers 5- and 10-kilometer races and a 1-kilometer race for kids. Even dogs (on short leashes) are welcome to participate in the 5K event. Participants are encouraged to run in holiday costumes. Dressing up isn’t required but there will be a costume contest as part of the festivities. Santa will be running the race. Catch him if you can.

When: 9 a.m. Saturday

Where: Dock Street Landing, 535 E. Dock St., Tacoma.

Getting there: From Interstate 5, take Exit 133 to Interstate 705. Take the 21st Street exit and turn left. Turn right on Pacific Avenue, then right on Hood Street. Turn right on South 15th Street, then left on Dock Street.

History: This is the fourth year for Santa Runs Tacoma, an event organized by the Tacoma City Marathon Association.

Cost: $35 for the 5K, $40 for the 10K, $15 for the 1K kid’s race. Discounts are available if you register today.

Of note: All participants receive a hat and gloves, although race officials say these items aren’t guaranteed for those who register on race day. Cash prices will be awarded to the top finishers. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Humane Society of Tacoma and Pierce County. Participants are encouraged to bring canned food which will be donated to the FISH Food Bank of Pierce County. The course has been certified by USA Track and Field. After the race participants receive a complimentary cup for chowder at Duke’s Chowder House. The Foss Waterway Seaport Building will be the site of a post-race party featuring music by MoonYard, a Tacoma band.
