Predictions for dry skies Friday night made it almost certain that construction crews would make a major traffic shift overnight on state Route 16 in Tacoma’s Nalley Valley.

Paint crews had been waiting for dry weather so they could lay down roadway striping that would guide traffic onto a new temporary eastbound bridge.

The state Department of Transportation’s contractor, Mowat Construction, scheduled a nighttime closure for eastbound state Route 16 from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. today.

The traffic shift had been scheduled for Thursday but was canceled because of rain.

The new 1,350-foot roadway and temporary viaduct will carry eastbound traffic to connections to both directions of Interstate 5.
