If you’ve never tried snowshoeing, joining a ranger-led walk is a good introduction to the sport. Walks are offered daily at 12:30 and 2:30 p.m. through the holiday break at the Jackson visitor center.
The walk covers about 11/2 miles and takes about two hours. They are limited to 25 people, 8 years old or older, on a first-come, first-served basis. A sign-up sheet is available at the visitor center information desk one hour before each walk. All participants must be present at sign-up.
The park has snowshoes available for participants. A $4 donation is requested from each participant to help pay for the program and repair and replace snowshoes.
After early January, walks are only offered on weekends and holidays.
If you prefer to try snowshoeing yourself, you can rent a pair at the Longmire General Store or stores throughout the South Sound. The Trail of Shadows at Longmire is a good option for beginners, as are the meadows close to the Jackson visitor center.
Remember that park visitors are required to have tire chains when driving into the park during the winter.
