Like much of Western Washington, high winds and high tides battered the greater Gig Harbor area Sunday night and into Monday morning, bringing down trees, flooding some waterfront areas at high tide and causing power outages. Weather forecasters said the worst of the wind has likely passed, but the stormy weather was expected to continue late Monday and into Tuesday with snow levels dropping to 200 feet in some areas.

"I've never seen it like this before," said Mike Youngchild of Gig Harbor, commenting on the choppy water and powerful waves crashing close to shore — and area restaurants and businesses — at the Purdy Spit.

The water close to shore was brown with sand dredged up from the churning sea, and carried several large logs and other debris close to shore.

Driving over the Purdy Spit Bridge earlier, Youngchild said he saw lots of wood in the water over the strait between Henderson Bay and Burley Lagoon.

"It's actually pretty cool lookin'," said Youngchild, a resident of Gig Harbor since the 1970s.

Area business owners perhaps didn't find it quite so cool-lookin'. The Red Rooster Cafe on Harborview Drive reported some flooding and even had some pictures on its Facebook page. The Tides Tavern, also on Harborview Drive, reported a high tide with water nearing the establishment.

Meanwhile, Peninsula Light Co., according to their Twitter feed, is still working to restore power to approximately 200 customers, mainly due to fallen trees and branches in lines.

From Monday evening into Tuesday morning, the Puget Sound — at least parts of it — was hit with at least a couple inches of snow.

The Gig Harbor area got a light dusting of the white stuff, but not enough to close or delay classes within the Peninsula School District.
