A 33-year-old Burbank man remained in critical condition Monday, three days after he was trapped inside his mangled pickup after a head-on crash on West Canal Drive.
Leon Landers Larche IV is being treated at Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Richland.
Larche was headed west in a red Ford Ranger when he tried to make a left turn into The Colonnade shopping center, at the entrance between Key Bank and Outback Steakhouse.
Kennewick police report that Larche failed to yield to a silver Dodge Ram that was eastbound on Canal Drive and was hit almost head-on by the Dodge.
The front end of the small pickup was smashed in, trapping Larche. Once freed, he initially was taken to Kennewick General Hospital, then transferred to Kadlec with critical injuries.
The driver of the Dodge was Dean Scharnhorst, 67, of Kennewick, said Mike Blatman, Kennewick police spokesman.
Scharnhorst retired from Kennewick Police Department in 1994 after 27 years on the force.
Scharnhorst was taken to Kadlec for minor injuries and chest pain, said Blatman. A hospital spokeswoman told the Herald that Scharnhorst was treated and released.
