Gusty winds knocked out power to about 2,500 Puget Sound Energy customers in Thurston County early Monday morning, and now there’s a chance of snow in the forecast, according to the National Weather Service.
The snow level was expected to fall to 100 feet from 600 feet Monday night, resulting in a possible half-inch of snow in the Olympia area.
There’s a also chance of snow showers before 10 a.m. today, followed by a chance of rain showers before 4 p.m.
The snow level is expected to rise again to 600 feet later today, National Weather Service data show.
Meanwhile, Monday morning’s gusty winds affected about 2,500 PSE customers in the county, spokesman Roger Thompson said.
The peak of the outages was reported at 4 a.m. Monday.
By about 1 p.m., the number of outages had been reduced to about 200, he said. Service was expected to be restored to all customers by Monday night, Thompson said.
Although breezy Monday morning, wind gusts likely were not as strong as forecast. A gust of 37 miles per hour was the Monday morning high, according to the National Weather Service, followed by gusts ranging from 20 to 30 miles per hour through Monday afternoon.
Still, that was enough to topple a 125-foot fir tree onto a house in the Steamboat Island area of the county, said Karen Drewry, co-owner of Double D Tree Service LLC of Olympia.
No one was hurt, she said, but the tree did fall through the house into the kitchen area.
Drewry, who co-owns the business with her husband, Dave, said they got a call Monday morning about the tree and arrived on the scene about noon. About 1:30 p.m. they were still working at the site, removing one chunk of the tree at a time, she said.
