Richland High School was the top school in Washington in collecting money for a fundraiser to pay for blood research and to fight leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma.

The school's students collected $10,851 as part of the Pasta for Pennies fundraiser during the 2011-12 school year, according to a press release. The three-week event was sponsored by restaurant chain Olive Garden and benefits the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Students around the state and country filled jars with spare change. The class that collected the most money at each participating school received a pasta party as a reward.

The fundraiser collected $181,000 in Washington and $10.7 million across the nation.
