The snow play area at Paradise did not open Friday as scheduled. When it will open depends on how quickly Mount Rainier National Park crews can groom the runs.

Following a series of storms in the last week, park road crews have been working to remove fallen trees and clear snow from roads and parking lots. They finally began grooming the runs at Paradise on Friday.

A park spokeswoman Friday morning said the goal is to open the sledding area this weekend, but could not say if crews could complete the work so the area could open today.

More than 50 inches of snow have fallen at Paradise in the last week, putting snow levels at 123 inches.

For updates on the status of the snow play area, call 360-569-2211 or go to nps.gov/mora.

Drivers are reminded that all vehicles are required to carry chains.
