VOLKSSPORT: Local club, inn hosting Cle Elum event Jan. 5-6

The Evergreen Wanderers volkssport club and Iron Horse Inn are working together for a cross-country ski and snowshoe event scheduled for Jan. 5-6.

Participants in the 10-kilometer event can start anytime from 8 a.m-1 p.m. Jan. 5 and 8 a.m.-noon Jan. 6. The finish time is 4 p.m. the first day and 3 p.m. the second.

Skiers and snowshowers will travel on the level Iron Horse Trail. An outstanding beginner’s trail, skiers will travel past the old power house station, along Tilman Creek and the Cle Elum and Yakima rivers.

The snowshoe route also is rated easy, heading east past two pond with great views of the Cle Elum valley.

Both trips start at the inn, located at 525 Marie Ave., South Cle Elum.

    A Kennewick man was killed on Interstate 90 after he lost control on the snowy road and drove under a semi-truck.

    Cristoval Martinez, 38, was going east on I-90 and was about eight miles east of Cle Elum when the 6:45 p.m. Monday wreck happened, the Washington State Patrol said. There was snow and slush on the highway.

    Martinez lost control of his 1993 Ford Mustang and swerved into the lane next to him where he went under the back of a semi-truck, troopers said. Martinez died at the scene.
