Falling trees causing havoc on Highway 2

The Washington State Patrol says another falling tree on U.S. Highway 2 has hit a car and injured five more people.

The Washington State Patrol says another falling tree on U.S. Highway 2 has hit a car and injured five more people.

KOMO-TV reports Saturday’s incident was the second serious accident caused by a tree falling over the highway because of heavy snow on the pass.

On Friday, a Bothell couple was killed and their four adult children were injured when a tree came down on their SUV.

In the most recent incident, a tree came down about 5:50 p.m. Saturday, about 22 miles west of Leavenworth. All five people inside the vehicle were injured, some of them seriously. The State Patrol says three adults and two children were all taken to area hospitals.

Highway 2 was closed over Stevens Pass after the second incident.

  • Mount Baker Highway likely to remain closed this weekend

    GLACIER - Mount Baker Highway east of Glacier could remain closed into the weekend as state Department of Transportation crews continue clearing more than 100 trees that fell onto the highway because of "unusually heavy" storms that brought a crush of wind, snow and rain, the DOT said Thursday, Dec. 20.

    The DOT closed that section of the highway Wednesday morning out of safety concerns, which means that the Mt. Baker Ski Area will remain closed as well.

    No one has been trapped by the closure, which is roughly a quarter-mile past Chair 9 Woodstone Pizza & Bar.

  • Mount Baker Highway reopens; ski area to open Saturday

    GLACIER - Mount Baker Highway east of Glacier reopened Friday, Dec. 21, after state Department of Transportation crews finished clearing the 175 trees that had toppled onto the road because of recent wet, snowy and windy weather.

    "It was a real team effort. We had 14 guys up there," Bronlea Mishler, DOT spokeswoman, said Friday of the effort that led to the 4 p.m. reopening. "A lot of work, 175 trees in the course of three whole days, that's amazing."

    That, in turn, will allow Mt. Baker Ski Area to reopen Saturday in full operation from both base areas, starting at 9 a.m.

    A 36-year-old bicyclist from the Maple Falls area was killed on Kendall Road Saturday evening, Jan. 26, and the driver who hit him was booked into jail for leaving the scene, according to Washington State Patrol.

    Two cyclists -- Steven E. Waterman and Daniel G. McKay, 51 -- were riding in the 8000 block of Kendall Road near Oregon Trail Road about 8:15 p.m. when they were hit by a 1994 Ford Escort. The two-lane road in that area has narrow shoulders and no designated bike lanes.

    Waterman died at the scene, which was about a mile north of the Kendall Road/Mount Baker Highway junction. McKay, who lives in the Maple Falls area, was injured and taken to St. Joseph hospital for treatment, according to state patrol.
