Anyone involved in high-school athletics at Peninsula or Gig Harbor during 2012 surely cracked a smile at some point.

It might have happened in February in the climate-controlled confines of the Tacoma Dome, where Peninsula senior Tyler Allen capped his wrestling career with a victory and a fifth-place medal at the Mat Classic state championships.

It might have happened on a warm, sun-drenched afternoon in April, when Nick Gagliardi pitched a three-hit gem, and Gig Harbor’s baseball team handed rival Olympia its first defeat of the season.

Or it might have happened on cold, rainy November night at Roy Anderson Field, when fans flooded the turf and shared in the celebration after Peninsula demolished Nathan Hale in the state football playoffs.

There was a lot to cheer about in the past 12 months, but the following 10 stories were the most compelling:
