Water polo is a fast-growing sport in Washington, and under coach Mike Kelly, Gig Harbor has become a perennial power.

The 2012 season wasn’t perfect, as the Tides saw their 46-match winning streak end with a 6-5 defeat to Enumclaw. But at the state tournament, Curtis upended Enumclaw in the semifinals to set up a fifth straight title clash between the Vikings and Tides.

Sophomore sensation Julia Ponce, who set the program’s single-season scoring record with 118 goals, scored a hat trick against Curtis, and Hannah Anderson’s solid goalkeeping led the Tides to a 9-7 win for their third consecutive championship.
