In recent seasons, Peninsula’s boys and girls soccer programs weren’t very successful, but that changed in a big way in 2012.
In the spring, Peninsula’s boys knew they’d have a stingy defense thanks to goalie Jason Bauknecht, but they needed their offense to improve. Players like Cole Madden, George Rowher and Sam Shea began to find their groove, and the team qualified for state, twice knocking off SPSL champion Decatur before avenging an early-season loss to Wilson in the district playoffs.
In the fall, Peninsula’s girls used a similar path to success. Goalie Katie Campbell, midfielder Jolene Kvinsland and forward Lauren Mercuri led the renaissance, and the Seahawks won playoff games against Enumclaw and Mountain View to reach state for the first time since 1995.
