Whatcom United Way gives out $82,599 for emergency food and shelter

United Way of Whatcom County has distributed a little over $82,599 in federal funds to local emergency food and shelter programs.

The dollars came through the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program, which is part of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Recipients are:

- Bellingham Food Bank - $29,000.

- Opportunity Council's Emergency Shelter Program - $20,000.

- Whatcom County Council on Aging's Meals on Wheels - $14,000.

- Northwest Youth Services' Positive Adolescent Development program - $6,500.

- WomenCare Shelter - $5,599.

- YWCA - $5,000.

- Opportunity Council's Maple Alley Inn - $2,500.

  • Whatcom County calls to 2-1-1 for help show a mixed picture in 2012

    Whatcom County residents needed help paying their home heating or utilities bills in the past year. Others asked for help in getting dental care and emergency shelter.

    Those were among the needs on the rise in 2012 - compared to the previous year - from people who called North Sound 2-1-1, according to Bill Brackin, its program director. The statistics go through November.

    Based in Everett, North Sound 2-1-1 is part of a statewide network of regional centers that field questions from callers who dial 211 to ask for help with an array of needs, including health and social services.

    BELLINGHAM - Northwest Youth Services will receive its state group care license for 16 beds on March 5, allowing the nonprofit to open its shelter for minors on North State Street the same day.

    The opening means the organization no longer will operate a temporary six-bed shelter at another location that had been rented for that purpose.

    Northwest Youth Services renovated the second story of its office building on North State for the shelter, at a cost of $350,000, for teens 13 to 17 years old. The project was made possible through labor, money and materials donated by the community.

A contractor finished installing the concrete bunker beneath the slab of their garage in early May. About three weeks later, the shelter saved their lives when a tornado that killed 24 people tore through their neighborhood.
