The Tacoma Police Department has released the name of the officer who fatally shot a 22-year-old woman after she pointed a gun at him.

The officer, Sean Ovens, 36, has been with the department for eight years.

The shooting occurred Saturday in the 3500 block of South Fawcett Avenue after Sophia Strickland’s mother called police about 9:45 p.m. to report Strickland had fired several rounds inside their home.

Strickland refused to speak with officers and began walking down the stairs toward Ovens while pointing a gun at him, police said. Ovens then shot her as she advanced.

He remains on administrative leave while the shooting is investigated, which is standard procedure after a police shooting.
