The Discovery Speaker Series in Olympia continues Thursday with a presentation on sustainability.

Jonathan Scherch of Antioch University in Seattle will be the speaker. Scherch will premier his short film, “Sustainability in Exile,” and follow it with a presentation highlighting sustainable practices in the Puget Sound region that are similar to those he observed overseas.

Among the Antioch classes he teaches are sustainable agriculture and permaculture design. Scherch also is the founder and executive director of Pacific Bamboo Resources.

The free event will be held at LOTT Water Education Center, 500 NE Adams, Olympia. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., while the presentation begins at 7 p.m.

    BELLINGHAM - Western Washington University's Huxley College of the Environment is offering a free talk by a local anti-coal activist on Thursday, Jan. 17.

    Matt Krogh of RE Sources for Sustainable Communities will give his presentation, "Coal at Cherry Point: Local Battle, Global Fallout" at 4 p.m. in Academic West room 204. A question-and-answer period will follow. The talk is open to the public.

    Krogh, a Huxley graduate, is also the northwest Washington director of the Power Past Coal coalition.

  • Democrats offer Richland talk by family law attorney

    RICHLAND -- The Tri-City Democrats upcoming meeting will feature guest speaker Jill Mullins, an attorney who focuses on family law issues for gay and lesbian community.

    The meeting will begin with a potluck at 6 p.m. Friday at 2505 Duportail St., Richland.

    Mullins' presentation will begin at 7 p.m.

  • Crystal Apple awards to be presented Thursday

    Thirteen teachers will be recognized for their contributions to education Thursday at the 15th annual Crystal Apple Awards.

    Superintendents from seven Mid-Columbia districts will present the awards, prize money and other gifts that come with the distinction at the event, according to a release.

    The event will be in the Byron Gjerde Center at Columbia Basin College in Pasco at 4:30 p.m.

  • Conference scheduled on spiritual disciplines

    Richland Lutheran Church is offering a one-day Renovare Essentials Conference on April 20.

    The conference will present a vision and practical strategy for spiritual growth based on the spiritual practices of Jesus Christ and the church over the centuries.

    Speakers are Kai Nielsen, a Lutheran pastor from Ohio, and Siang-Yang Tan a professor of Psychology from Fuller Theological Seminary.
