While Marsha Mansfield holds a flashlight and her apparent disgust , Nathan Fontana (both from University Place) gingerly dips his finger below the surface of a holding pool to touch a giant Sunflower star, during the Pier Peer Adventure night at the Foss Waterway Seaport in Tacoma in 2011. The event, which allows people of all ages to see and touch crabs, starfish and other marine life, was put on by People for Puget. The event also involved submerging bright lights to attract creatures from the depths. (DEAN J. KOEPFLER/ NEWS TRIBUNE FILE, 2011)

The next chances to look for marine creatures at night will be Saturday at Boston Harbor Marina in Olympia and Jan. 12 at the Foss Waterway Seaport in Tacoma.

The Pier Peer programs offer families a chance to see what marine creatures live below the docks. Trained naturalists will be on hand to explain what creatures are discovered and answer any questions.

Participants should bring their own flashlight (one per person is ideal) and dress for the weather.

The Boston Harbor event, run by the South Sound Estuary Association, will begin at 8 p.m. Children younger than 5 years of age are not advised, and all children must be accompanied by an adult. The cost is $10 per adult and children are free. Ten adults must be registered to hold the event. The program is held the first Saturday of every month.

You can sign up at sseacenter.wordpress.com/pier-peer.

The Tacoma program is sponsored by Foss Waterway Seaport and Metro Parks Tacoma, and will be from 7:30-9 p.m. It is for people ages 8 and older. The cost is $8 per person. Each child requires one adult companion. Personal flotation devices will be provided and required, but feel free to bring your own.

The remaining programs will be held at the Point Defiance Marina on Jan. 19, Feb. 2, Feb. 23 and March 2.
