A 33-year-old woman who suspected her husband of having an affair started a fire in their house Sunday, forcing the couples children to hide in a closet and call for help, Tacoma police reported Monday.
The woman was burning some of her husbands items when the rug caught fire at their home in the 3800 block of East J Street, police spokeswoman Loretta Cool said.
The womans husband was not home.
The womans 13-year-old daughter told her three younger sisters to hide in the closet because smoke from the fire was thick, Cool said. The older girl called a relative for help, and the relative called 911.
By the time fire crews arrived, the woman had extinguished the flames.
Police arrested the woman on suspicion of arson and domestic violence and called Child Protective Services, which placed the children with their father.
One child was treated for smoke inhalation.
