Freezing fog, inversion to cover Mid-Columbia

Occasional flurries and freezing drizzle are possible in the Tri-Cities after 10 a.m. today through tonight, according to the National Weather Service.

Patchy freezing fog is in the forecast for the rest of the week and into early next week as strong inversions below 3,000 feet persist for the Mid-Columbia, according to the weather service.

With the inversion trapping air near the surface, air quality may worsen over time as smoke and other particulates remain in a shallow layer at the surface, it said.

High temperatures should be near freezing through the rest of the week and lows should be in the mid- to upper-20s in the Tri-Cities.

  • Stagnant air, fog will continue until Tuesday

    The National Weather Service has issued a dense fog advisory for the Tri-Cities and has extended the air stagnation advisory through 10 a.m. Tuesday.

    However, the end to the inversion over the Mid-Columbia and persistent fog may be in sight. The weather service predicts that a change in the weather pattern could bring some precipitation and an end to stagnant conditions Wednesday.

    But until then, expect dense or patchy fog in the Mid-Columbia, possibly freezing on roadways overnight.

  • Weather service issues hard freeze warning

    The National Weather Service in Pendleton has issued a hard freeze warning for the Tri-City area from midnight through 9 a.m. Wednesday.

    Temperatures will fall to near or below freezing by midnight and likely remain there until mid-morning Wednesday, forecasters said.

    Temperatures are expected to be 22 to 28 degrees with some isolated colder pockets in the lower valleys, the weather service said.

  • Weather to get warmer, wetter in Whatcom County

    After nearly two weeks of icy conditions, the usual Whatcom County wet weather pattern is expected to return Wednesday, Jan. 23, according to the National Weather Service.

    Overnight temperatures haven't gone above freezing since Jan. 9, NWS meteorologist Andy Haner said.

    The coldest temperature recorded at Bellingham International Airport in that time was 19 degrees on Jan. 13. Though it was consistently below freezing, it was never cold enough to break records, Haner said.

  • Freezing fog likely next week in Mid-Columbia

    Be sure your car's heater is working and keep the ice scraper handy. The new year is likely to bring freezing fog to parts of the Mid-Columbia.

    Overnight temperatures will be in the 20s with daytime highs reaching into the low to mid-30s, according to the national weather service. There's a chance of rain and snow during the weekend but sunshine should bring in the new year.

    Anyone heading north to Spokane can expect similar conditions with colder nighttime temperatures. There likely will be snow showers over the weekend, followed by patchy fog into the first of the week.
