The Nooksack Indian Tribe and two organizations in Whatcom County received a total of $723,772 for salmon recovery efforts, the state Recreation and Conservation Office announced.
The office's Salmon Recovery Funding Board awarded the tribe $315,435 in two separate grants to help salmon habitat in the north and south fork of the Nooksack River. The money will be used to design restoration projects on the south fork near Nessett Farm and to build artificial log jams on the north fork - downstream of Canyon Creek - to improve areas where salmon grow, rest or spawn.
Whatcom County Flood Control Zone District received $292,248 to build log jams in lower Canyon Creek to create more habitat for salmon.
Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association received $116,089 to design a project to place logs and tree root wads in the lower middle fork of the Nooksack River to create more habitat for salmon. It is a project in collaboration with Lummi Nation Natural Resources.
