Tacoma police arrested a 37-year-old man Friday after he allegedly shot his girlfriend and then led officers on a short chase through the central part of the city.

The man was booked into the Pierce County Jail for investigation of domestic violence-related assault, police spokeswoman Loretta Cool said.

The action started when a woman showed up at a hospital with a gunshot wound to the stomach, Cool said. Police were called, and the woman, after telling a variety of stories, eventually told officers her boyfriend had shot her.

“She was very uncooperative,” Cool said.

Officers still were at the hospital when the boyfriend arrived about 1:15 p.m. An officer tried to talk to the man, but he ran to his pickup and drove away, Cool said.

Police gave chase, and the man lost control of the pickup near South 17th and Fife streets, crashing the truck through a privacy fence. He then ran off but was tracked down and arrested, Cool said.

No other injuries were reported.
