Volunteers sought to remove Festival of Lights decorations

UMATILLA -- The Umatilla Chamber of Commerce is seeking volunteers to help take down its annual Festival of Lights decorations starting at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Umatilla County Fairgrounds.

Those wishing to help should bring wire cutters, pliers, screwdrivers, gloves and any other tools that might help in the tear-down process.

  • Biologist says dam work has helped protected fish

    PENDLETON-- Research on the Umatilla River in northeast Oregon shows fixing irrigation dams has allowed more of the protected steelhead and salmon to pass through.

    Biologist Craig Contor of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation said that in the 1990s few fish made it upstream to spawn because fish ladders at dams were clogged with gravel or were above the water line because of erosion.

    He said adding rocks in the river and cleaning out the gravel in the ladders helped the fish. He said almost 1,000 fish have been tagged with tracking devices since 2009, and nearly all made it through the spawning system.

    UMATILLA -- Tickets still are available for the Umatilla Distinguished Citizen Award Banquet. The banquet will begin at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Umatilla High School commons, 1400 Seventh St.

    Community members will be honored for their contributions at the luau-themed event.

    Tickets are $30 and are available through Monday at Java Junkies, Carlson's Umatilla Drag Store, Banner Bank and the Umatilla Chamber of Commerce office.

  • Umatilla man's death ruled a homicide

    A body found near the intersection of highways 730 and 395 was identified Monday as a Umatilla man. And authorities are calling his death a homicide.

    A medical examiner from Portland was expected to perform an autopsy Monday, according to a news release from the Umatilla County District Attorney's Office.

    The cause of his death was not released.
