WINTER SPORTS: Snowshoeing, Nordic skiing topics of classes

The Olympia Mountaineers will offer its winter travel course beginning Jan. 15.

The course consists of two classes: snowshoeing and Nordic skiing. This series of four lectures will include an orientation, registration, avalanche awareness and safety, the 10 Essentials, backcountry winter travel etiquette, cold weather ailments, clothing and equipment.

Lectures will be from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Jan. 15-16 and Jan. 22-23, with the Nordic skiing field trip on Jan. 26 and the snowshoeing field trip on Jan. 27.

The cost is $25 for Mountaineers members, $35 for nonmembers. To take both courses, requiring both field trips, will require an additional $15 for members and nonmembers.

A competitive ski team that will be racing in the Youth Ski League against other youth ski teams from the Anchorage area. This program is for ages 7-13, who are intermediate to advanced skiers. Program includes: professional coaching by experienced racers, pre-season dryland training, running gates, video analysis of students skiing, 3-hour pratices twice a week.
