Bill’s Towing is willing to refund all but $27.50 per driver for people whose cars were impounded in downtown Tacoma during the First Night celebration on New Year’s Eve, company spokesman Mike Weinman said Sunday.
He said the company has a contract with the City of Tacoma, which it charges $27.50 per vehicle towed.
The organizations usually coordinate for city events to tow cars to a lot downtown and to charge car owners the lower rate, Weinman said, a smaller price tag than the $250 one woman told The News Tribune she paid to get her car back last week.
When the owner read a News Tribune story about the towing, he decided to offer the refund, to match the price drivers would usually pay if their car was impounded at a city function, Weinman said. The company didn’t realize that the roughly 10 vehicles were driven by people at First Night, he added.
Tacoma police officers put up “No Parking” signs the day before the event, and tried to notify owners for about an hour before cars were towed, spokeswoman Loretta Cool said last week.
To get the refund, drivers must take their receipt to the lot where they picked up their cars. It is valid only for vehicles towed between 6 p.m. Dec. 31 and 6 a.m. Jan. 1, Weinman said.
