Benefit for blind center planned in Prosser

PROSSER -- A fundraiser will be held in Prosser to benefit the Edith Bishel Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired.

The fundraiser, coordinated by high school student Amanda Russell as her senior project, will honor Prosser resident Eileen Bradley, a blind woman who died in February after being hit by a car.

Attendees will be blindfolded during their meal as part of an awareness campaign.

The dinner will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Prosser High School, 1203 Prosser Ave.

Dinner will be prepared by the restaurant Tuscany Downtown. The event includes a silent auction.

Tickets are $20 each and can be purchased by calling 509-788-5946.

    It was delayed 68 years, but Harold L. Choate finally has received the Silver Star for his heroism in World War II.

    Choate died three years ago. He likely never knew about the medal, because the paperwork never caught up with him as he was rushed from a battlefield in Germany, to a hospital in England and then back stateside. Instead it was buried in the Army's archives.

    The medal was presented Friday to his daughter, Judy Ekiert, and grandson, Jereme Ekiert, both of Richland, by Congressman Doc Hastings at American Legion Post 34 in Pasco.

  • Prosser teen recognized as Youth of the Year

    PROSSER -- Ava Tolcacher, 18, has been named Youth of the Year for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Benton and Franklin County.

    The award recognizes outstanding contributions to family, school and community and the Boys & Girls Clubs, according to a release. Prosser High School senior will now compete for the state title and a $1,000 scholarship.

    This is the second year in a row that a youth from the Prosser Boys & Girls Club has won the area award.

  • Prosser student wins statewide VFW contest

    A Prosser fifth-grader took first place in a state VFW essay contest.

    Peter E. Felicijan, 11, won a certificate and $100 savings bond.

    Peter, the son of Pete and Connie Felicijan, won first place in the local competition, representing Prosser VFW Smith-Runa Post 3207. He also won first place in District 17, which is made up of Kennewick, West Richland, Prosser, Sunnyside, Yakima, Grandview and Mabton.
