From fabric art and photographs to papercuts and paintings, more than 200 pieces were donated to South Puget Sound Community College’s second annual fine art postcard exhibit and silent auction.
According to curator Robin Ewing, there were only two rules for the show: The artwork had to fit on a 4-by-6 inch base, and embody the theme “My kind of place.”
“There’s quite a broad range of how people interpreted ‘My kind of place,’” Ewing said.
For example, the show includes postcards with scenes of snow-capped mountains, forested groves, Olympia’s artesian well and the Pacific Ocean. But there’s also a pair that make political statements about censorship, and several sculptures.
SPSCC student Tanya Hoehne, 20, said she especially enjoyed the postcard featuring a golfer who appeared to be swinging on top of the world because it reminded her of her dad.
“They’re all very, very different from each other,” she added. “It’s really cool.”
Fifty-four local and regional artists participated in the show, Ewing said. The works will be featured in a silent auction that will begin during a reception Friday evening. Bidding will close on Feb. 15 during a closing reception.
“The proceeds go to benefit the gallery,” Ewing said.
Gallery volunteer Lois Beck entered a series of collages and a photograph of Crater Lake in the exhibit.
She said she was happy to participate in the fundraiser.
“This gallery is the best space in town, and it’s fun to support it,” Beck said.
Artist Mia Schulte entered a pair of sumi and acrylic ink drawings into the show.
She said she appreciated the amount of work that the college staff put into creating a professional- level exhibit.
“These shows don’t just happen,” she said. “There’s a lot of work that goes behind the scenes.”
