Fish rap: January is good for ice anglers and the brave

Since this is a fishing column, and there’s a fishing report below, it doesn’t make sense to say “stay home, it’s too ugly out there.” It’s never too ugly, just ask any ice angler. They ignore cold weather like a penguin in a goose down sweater.

Since this is a fishing column, and there’s a fishing report below, it doesn’t make sense to say “stay home, it’s too ugly out there.” It’s never too ugly, just ask any ice angler. They ignore cold weather like a penguin in a goose down sweater. It’s prime time for ice fishing, and the big three in Southwest Idaho are Horsethief Reservoir, Lake Cascade and Magic Reservoir. Lake Cascade and Magic both have perch, which is a favorite quarry ice anglers. Fry up some winter-fresh fillets and you will understand why. They also provide lots of action, even if it’s just the little bait thieves.

Lake Cascade is again producing jumbo perch. There have been several caught that were a couple ounces shy of 2 pounds. If you were following the fun last year, one angler tied the state record and several anglers came within ounces of it, so if you get a monster perch, weight it before breaking out the fillet knife.

Magic has been producing trout so fat you could probably trim the bellies and make bacon. Trout bacon, anyone? Maybe not.

Horsethief will host the Fourth annual Youth Ice Fishing Day on Saturday. See details on page 4. It’s hugely popular because it’s so much fun to see kids out on the ice hooking trout, or just munching hot dogs and fishing. The focus is on kids, but it’s really a family event.

If you’re not an ice angler, there are still opportunities. River fishing for trout can be fun when there’s a break in the weather, and the Salmon River is back to producing steelhead.

  • When nature gives you ice, go ice fishing

If ever there was a good winter for ice fishing, this is it. Temperatures settled below freezing for weeks and put a thick layer of ice on many area lakes and reservoirs.

Old hands are hitting their usual haunts, and many new ice anglers are taking advantage of the prime conditions and good fishing.

Ice fishing is usually limited to a few places in Southwest and Central Idaho with Lake Cascade, Horsethief Reservoir and Magic Reservoir among the favorites.

  • Roger's fish rap: When it’s this cold, it’s time to go ice fishing

I swear I wasn’t asleep at the switch. I called about ice conditions at Magic Reservoir mid month and it sounded like people were sitting around the reservoir with Hawaiian shirts and tropical drinks. OK, maybe that’s a stretch, but there was no ice.

  • Skagit County lakes offer variety for fishers

Skagit County lakes offer all the variety of recreational fishing that Whatcom County waters do, and four Skagit lowland lakes receive the same fine trout, produced at Kendall Creek and Bellingham Trout hatcheries, that Whatcom lakes do,

So whether it's a change of scenery you want, a more finicky trout that'll test skills, tastier fare for the fry pan or perhaps scarcer but bigger quarry, you'll find a selection of fishing lakes in our neighboring county to satisfy any need or desire.

When you take to the water on opening day Saturday, keep these things in mind:

  • To improve your fishing, start with your head

Often the best fishing tackle isn't what's on the end of your line, it's what's holding up your hat.

  • Eastside March 1 trout lakes beckon

At the start of the March 1 trout opening, winter is giving way east of the Cascades in southeast and central locales, but March trout anglers could still find a lot of iced-over water in the Okanogan.

Except for such lakes as Fish, in the Lake Wenatchee area, and Palmer and Sidley, along the northern tier east and west of Oroville, that are tucked back into the mountains at higher elevations, anglers are cautioned not to trust in the weight-bearing ability of lake ice from now until melt-out.
