Richland Citizens for Good Schools seeking volunteers

The Richland Citizens for Good Schools committee is looking for volunteers to encourage Richland School District residents to vote for a proposed $98 million bond.

The committee will hold a kick-off meeting for its efforts at 4 p.m. today at the district's administrative offices on Snow Avenue.

Committee leaders will go over campaign plans and ask volunteers to sign up for activities, including curbside rallies, door-to-door visits and making phone calls to residents.

    Hanford High School students plan an event called "Evening of International Solutions -- New Year, New Hope."

    Students will discuss more than 40 important world problems and encouraged participants to be part of the solution.

    Attendees also will have the chance to donate to or volunteer time with organizations supported by the students.

  • 3 candidates drop out of Kennewick City Council race

    Three of the 10 candidates vying for a spot on the Kennewick City Council have dropped out of the race.

    Those withdrawing their names are Brian Bradford, a personal caregiver and past member of the Ben Franklin Transit citizen's advisory committee; Bill Monroe, an unemployed nuclear worker who served as a Mattawa councilman from 2000-06; and Raymond Hui, an attorney and member of the Kennewick Planning Commission.

    The seven other applicants will be interviewed beginning at 9 a.m. today at a special council meeting at City Hall, 210 W. Sixth Ave.

  • Concert to benefit effort for refugee housing

    A World Relief Benefit Concert and Cultural Celebration is being held to benefit refugee housing. It will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at First Presbyterian Church, 2001 W. Kennewick Ave., Kennewick.

    It will feature local musicians, refugee artists and performers, samples of international food and a silent auction.

    The event is being led by Richland High School senior Susan Bengtson. She and her family are volunteers with World Relief, which helps refugees establish themselves in their new communities.

  • Girls weld some ‘MAGIC’ in Kennewick

    Rachelle Lizotte, 17, left, talks with Janice Knight, 16, on Wednesday while Breanna Bagwell, 17, welds during the fifth annual Mentor A Girl in Construction (MAGIC) Camp at Tri-Tech Skills Center in Kennewick. Lizotte, a student at Kamiakin High School in Kennewick and at Tri-Tech, participated in the first MAGIC Camp and was volunteering this year to share her love of welding. The four-day camp concludes on Thursday and featured hands-on introductions to various careers in construction. Knight is a student at Delta High School in Richland and Bagwell is a student at Othello High School.
