Karolyn Friday of Kennewick told the Herald on Wednesday that she's been getting calls from Essential Sweepstakes for days, at all hours. She said the caller claims the contest is linked to Publishers Clearing House and Reader's Digest.
Friday said the caller claims she's won a prize. But then goes on to say she needs to send $399 to pay the taxes before Essential Sweepstakes will send Friday her winnings.
Scammers are shopping too, and the bad guys are stepping up their game, taking advantage of consumers through traditional rip-off methods – and some new schemes too.
