Snow blanketed the Treasure Valley Thursday, closing schools and snarling traffic as icy roads caused dozens of crashes and slide-offs.

The National Weather Service recorded 2.3 inches at its headquarters near the Boise airport as of Thursday evening.

The snow tapered off into the evening, and no substantial accumulation is expected this weekend.

But it’s expected to be very cold.

Saturday’s low was predicted to be just 4 degrees as of Thursday night, and “that might not be cold enough,” said Joshua Smith, a meteorologist in Boise.

Students in the Boise, Meridian, Nampa, Caldwell and most other Valley schools stayed home Thursday — the first time the schools closed for snow since December 2010.

Kuna held school but cancelled after-school activities and practices.

“We want to make sure people get home before dark,” Assistant Superintendent Wendy Johnson said.

Emergency crews responded to dozens of crashes in the region, and Interstate 84 at the Utah border was closed for most of the day because of whiteout conditions.
