It's a bad time to be a fortune teller if you're trying to predict the results of the Class 4A Narrows League basketball races.
That's particularly true for the boys, as the prohibitive favorites keep getting knocked off. Olympia, which was undefeated through its first seven games, has lost its past two games to Stadium and South Kitsap, falling into a tie for the fourth and final playoff spot.
Bellarmine is now in sole possession of first place with a 4-1 record, but the Lions certainly aren't invincible, as evidenced by their six losses outside of league play. They've played a tough schedule, including three games at a high-profile tournament in California.
Stadium, which visits Gig Harbor on Friday, might be the league's hottest team behind senior Eric Anderson-Connolly, and it'll be interesting to see how the shorthanded Tides respond after Wednesday's blowout loss to Foss. The team is missing five players who were suspended due to violations of the school's athletic code, which you can read about in my Thursday blog post.
On the girls' side, things seem nearly as wacky. With the exception of 4-0 Bellarmine, the playoff race appears wide open. South Kitsap, which has been a very good team the past few years, appears to have fallen on harder times. The Wolves' 36-point loss to Olympia on Wednesday was their seventh in 10 games to start the year.
Gig Harbor has a chance to move up, playing struggling Stadium and South Kitsap in its next two games. Olympia and Yelm, whom the Tides have already beaten, are right ahead of them in the standings.
Next week, I'll have a story from Friday's Peninsula - Auburn Mountainview girls game, which represents another opportunity for the Seahawks to cement their turnaround-team-of-the-year status. The Hawks lost to Enumclaw by three points on Tuesday, a more competitive result than they've had in recent years against the Hornets.
Defending league champ Auburn Mountainview isn't the same team it has been over the last two seasons, but a win by Peninsula certainly puts them in good position to cement a playoff spot, and maybe sends the message they're ready to win in the postseason, too.
