    The Idaho Humane Society on Monday evening received 63 pit bull dogs from Oneida County in southeastern Idaho.

    The dogs are from an apparent dog-fighting compound on a property where a triple homicide occurred Thursday near Holbrook.

    The animals are in very poor condition, according to the Humane Society. The majority of the dogs are underweight and suffer from malnutrition and many of the dogs have open lacerations and extensive scarring from old wounds. Others are suffering from skin, eye and ear ailments. A few dogs have old injuries of broken bones that were left untreated.

    But what the Everson native loved best were the moments between the action, when Marines had down time, were resting or were sharing candy and water with local children.

    "A good photo doesn't have to be Marines out in the fight. It can be those raw, unfiltered moments where they're human," Lodder said. "That's the reality of it. They're tired, they're sore, they need to take a minute for some water, a moment of rest."

    Pit bull experts from the Oakland rescue group Bad Rap are in Boise this week to help care for more than 60 pit bulls rescued from an eastern Idaho dog-fighting operation where three people were slain earlier this month. They are training shelter staff and assisting in assessing the dogs.
