An 18-year-old Orting man who was seriously injured Sunday after crashing his vehicle on state Route 162 fell asleep behind the wheel, the Washington State Patrol said Monday.

The accident happened about 1:30 a.m. when the man’s car left the eastbound lane near Orville Road East and hit a power pole.

Investigators said neither drugs nor alcohol played a role in the crash.

The man was listed in critical condition Monday at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, hospital spokeswoman Susan Gregg said. Friends reported he suffered a partially collapsed lung and broken bones in his arm and pelvis.
