A fire that damaged a vacant Tacoma house early Sunday was started by transients trying to keep warm or cook food, the Tacoma Fire Department said Monday.

Flames were reported shortly before 4 a.m. at the house in the 1900 block of South Yakima Avenue.

Three firefighters were hurt trying to get to the fire. The house is on a hill, and icy conditions made it difficult for crews to reach the blaze.

Damages were estimated at $120,000.
