A Tacoma woman whose apartment was burglarized tracked down the alleged culprit, recovered her own stolen television and then called police to turn him in.
According to court documents:
The woman returned home Aug. 23 to her apartment in the 4000 block of North 19th Street and learned two men had been seen kicking in the front door and carrying a television to their car.
Based on the description provided by neighbors, the woman thought one of the men might be a former high school acquaintance. She confronted the 23-year-old man, and after a two-hour conversation, persuaded him to return the television.
It had a cracked screen, so he “offered to ‘kick in another door’ and get them a better television to replace the broken one,” the documents state.
The woman told police about her conversation with the man and said he’d admitted to breaking into her apartment with a 25-year-old man.
During interviews with police, each man blamed the burglary on the other, each claiming he had not entered the apartment.
The 25-year-old also offered to buy the victim a new television to “make the peace,” court records show.
Pierce County prosecutors on Monday charged both men with residential burglary.
