Thursday’s highlights
The Gig Harbor boys swim team completed its first undefeated run through the Narrows 4A since 2009 when the Tides upended Stadium, 105-81, in Tacoma. The Tides’ Jackson Curtis overcame a deficit on the last lap to win the 200-yard freestyle in 1 minute, 52.89 seconds — a personal-best by 2.5 seconds. Gig Harbor won the 400 free relay in 3:22.40. Stadium’s Logan Rysemus won his races in the 200 individual medley (1:58.70) and 500 free (4:57.92).
In a matchup of Class 3A wrestling powerhouses, No. 2 Enumclaw eked out a 36-30 victory at No. 3 Decatur to lock up the SPSL 3A dual-meet championship in Federal Way.
A Juwan Flowers steal set up Bodgon Baliznyuk’s decisive basket, and Beamer escaped with a 67-64 SPSL South boys basketball win over Spanaway Lake in Federal Way. Trailing most of the game, the Sentinels grabbed their first lead, 62-61, with three minutes to go. Baliznyuk paced the Titans, who pull into a second-place tie with Federal Way, with 22 points and 16 rebounds. Braxton Tucker led all scorers with 23 points for the Sentinels.
Once again, Auburn made its free throws down the stretch – this time by Harold Lee with six seconds to go. Given the chance to tie with two-tenths of a second remaining, Kentlake missed both of its attempts – and the Trojans stayed atop the SPSL North boys’ basketball standings with a 57-55 victory.
Brittany McPhee scored 30 points for newly minted No. 1 Mount Rainier, which survived its closest girls basketball game in the SPSL North by winning at Kentridge, 48-39.
Marissa Miller made four free throws in the final 70 seconds, and the No. 4 Puyallup girls survived an SPSL South nail-biter at Bethel, 39-35, completing a season sweep of the Braves. The score was tied at 35 when Miller made two free throws to give Puyallup the lead for good. Bethel’s Kaytreeona Mack missed a pair of free throws on the Braves’ end — and Miller made two more eight seconds later after being fouled on a rebound.
Kalani Ulufale scored 19 points, and Rogers pulled away with a 13-2 second-quarter run in posting a 52-32 SPSL South girls basketball victory over host Emerald Ridge, which was without standout guard Riley Clarke (knee).
