Health, economic disparities focus of Bellingham forum

BELLINGHAM - A Thursday, Jan. 24, forum will focus on health and economic disparities in Whatcom County, what organizations are doing about those disparities, and how the community can get involved.

The free event is open to the public.

It runs 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the YWCA Bellingham Ballroom, 1026 N. Forest St.

Speakers will include:

• Astrid Newell, community health manager at Whatcom County Health Department, will present key findings from the most recent Community Health Assessment.

• Greg Winter, director of Whatcom Homeless Service Center, will discuss key pieces of the Whatcom Prosperity Project.

• Jeff King, director of the Center for Cross-Cultural Research at Western Washington University, will talk about national trends.

  • Mental health and public safety focus of Feb. 19 community forum in Bellingham

    BELLINGHAM - Recognizing the signs of mental illness and helping people before they threaten public safety will be the focus of a Tuesday, Feb. 19, event in Bellingham.

    The local event is being organized by Whatcom Counseling & Psychiatric Clinic. It grows out of the Dec. 14 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

    "We want to make very clear this is about the mental health aspects of Newtown. This is not about guns. That's a whole different conversation," said Dave Kleiber, president of the board of directors for the nonprofit clinic.

    BELLINGHAM - A town hall on the future of health care and health care reform in Whatcom County will be held Tuesday, Jan. 29, in Municipal Court, 2014 C St. in Bellingham.

    The event runs 6 to 8 p.m. Whatcom Alliance for Health Advancement is organizing the event through its Community Organizing Group for Health, which is made up of community members.

    It will feature a panel that will include:

  • Human trafficking focus of March 9 talk in Bellingham

    BELLINGHAM - A discussion on human trafficking in Whatcom County is set for Saturday, March 9, at the Bellingham Public Library.

    The event is 9 a.m. to noon in the lecture room of the library, 210 Central Ave.

    It will include presentations by Community to Community, Washington Engage, Access Freedom, Whatcom County Sheriff's Office, and Engedi Refuge Ministries.

  • Whatcom employers honored for domestic violence awareness

    FERNDALE - Ten Whatcom County employers will be honored Thursday, Jan. 24, for their efforts to respond to and support victims of domestic violence in the workplace.

    The 10 a.m. ceremony at the Ferndale Police Department is part of an initiative by the Bellingham-Whatcom County Commission Against Domestic Violence to expand the community's response to victims of domestic violence. The workplace policy and procedures include information about victim safety and confidentiality, abuser accountability, victim and workplace safety plans, the state's Domestic Violence Leave Law and local resources.   • Report: Whatcom County is fifth healthiest county in the state

    Whatcom County is the fifth healthiest county in Washington state - holding steady from last year - according to the fourth annual report that ranks nearly every county in the nation.

    The 2013 County Health Rankings assesses how healthy residents are and how long they live to arrive at an overall ranking. It is a collaboration of the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

    "We're staying pretty much the same," said Dr. Astrid Newell, community health manager for Whatcom County Health Department, of this year's ranking compared to 2012.
