Whatcom County MLK Day events call for action

BELLINGHAM - Whatcom County residents can march, hike or just listen to honor Martin Luther King on Monday, Jan. 21.

Here are several events that will take place throughout the county to mark the holiday.

• Shining the Light: The city of Bellingham will host its annual Martin Luther King Day event at noon in Bellingham City Hall, 210 Lottie St. The event will feature speakers and performances by the Kulshan Chorus.

• Cleanup: Bellingham Parks and Recreation Department and Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association are hosting a work party from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Maritime Heritage Park to restore habitat and plant native shrubs. Participants can meet at the north end of C Street near the fish hatchery and check in at the blue NSEA tents. Gloves, tools and instructions will be provided, along with refreshments and raffle prizes.

• Poverty action march: The event will start with a free community breakfast with speakers at 10 a.m. at Bellingham High School, 2020 Cornwall Ave. People are encouraged to bring items such as baby food, diapers, soap, toiletries and canned goods to donate at the breakfast. At 11 a.m., the poverty action march will begin at the school, head to Bellingham City Hall and then loop back to the school, with a goal of raising awareness and support for those in poverty. The march will be followed by a variety of student service projects.

• Read-in: Parents can bring their kids ages 3 to 8 to join Western Washington University students for activities and stories about social justice. The read-in will run from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. in the readings gallery at Village Books, 1200 11th St.

• Free recreation: The U.S. Forest Service is waiving fees on Mt Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest for the holiday.

  • Downtown march among many Bellingham events honoring MLK Day

    BELLINGHAM — About 150 people turned out to walk through downtown in a “poverty action march” on Martin Luther King Day.

    The 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 21, march around the Bellingham High School area was meant to raise awareness and support of those in poverty. Prior to the event, people were asked to bring baby food, canned goods and toiletries to help others. After the march many participants were headed out to join various service projects around the city.

    In other events in honor of the holiday, Village Books is hosting a read-in where parents can bring kids ages 3 to 8 to join Western Washington University students for activities and stories about social justice. The read-in will run from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. in the readings gallery at Village Books, 1200 11th St. in Bellingham.

  • Bellingham high schools host fundraising concert for cancer care

    BELLINGHAM - An effort to help a Squalicum High School teacher who was diagnosed with cancer has led to the creation of a fund for other teachers affected by the disease and a multischool concert Thursday, May 16.

    The One Voice Concert will start at 7 p.m. in the gym at Squalicum High School, 3773 E. McLeod Road, and will feature performances from more than 300 band, choir and orchestra students.

    The concert is collaboration by Squalicum, Sehome and Bellingham high schools and will include special alumni guest performances.

  • Human trafficking focus of March 9 talk in Bellingham

    BELLINGHAM - A discussion on human trafficking in Whatcom County is set for Saturday, March 9, at the Bellingham Public Library.

    The event is 9 a.m. to noon in the lecture room of the library, 210 Central Ave.

    It will include presentations by Community to Community, Washington Engage, Access Freedom, Whatcom County Sheriff's Office, and Engedi Refuge Ministries.

  • Bellingham workshop will focus on fair housing laws

    BELLINGHAM - People can learn about fair housing laws at a free workshop Thursday, March 7, in the YWCA Ballroom, 1026 N. Forest St.

    Sponsored by the city of Bellingham, the event is 2 to 3:30 p.m.

    The workshop will be valuable for rental housing owners, property managers, renters and housing advocates, according to a Bellingham news release, and will include in-depth discussions on issues such as disability, familial status, sexual orientation and domestic violence.

  • Improv event to raise money for Whatcom County school programs

    BELLINGHAM - Local students are hoping to turn laughs into dollars at Communities in Schools of Whatcom County's Improv for Education event Saturday, June 1.

    The event will run from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at Broadway Hall, 1300 Broadway, and will include student improv, dinner, a silent and live auction, and a dessert dash.

    Those interested in attending can register for the event for free at ciswhatcom.org. Donations will be accepted for Communities in Schools, which works with schools to provide tutors, mentors, school supplies and to create enrichment programs for students.
