Salary commission for Whatcom elected officials to hold first meeting

The first meeting of the group that will set salaries for Whatcom County elected officials is Wednesday, Jan. 23. The date has been changed since the original announcement.

The Commission on Salaries for Elected Officials meets from 4 to 6 p.m. in the board room of the Whatcom Transportation Authority, 4111 Bakerview Spur Road, Bellingham. It is open to the public.

The commission has until May 1 to set 2014-15 salaries for the county executive, council members, assessor, auditor, prosecuting attorney, sheriff and treasurer. The first meeting is organizational and will include a discussion of how the commission might schedule public comments.

Voters approved the commission in November 2011. The council had been setting salaries for itself and other elected officials.

    A new commission that will set salaries for Whatcom County's elected officials will hold a public hearing on Wednesday, March 13.

    The Commission on Salaries for Elected Officials wants to hear from the public before making salary recommendations for the council, executive, assessor, auditor, prosecuting attorney, sheriff and treasurer. The commission has until May 1 to decide these officials' salaries for 2014-15.

    Commissioners have been looking at salaries in comparable counties and the salaries of other Whatcom County employees, to get a sense of what appropriate compensations would be.

  • New salary commission approves raises for Whatcom elected officials

    Elected officials in Whatcom County will receive raises in 2014 and again in 2015, after the county's first citizen salary commission finalized the compensation for the executive, council, assessor, auditor, prosecutor, sheriff and treasurer.

    On Thursday, April 18, the Commission on Salaries for Elected Officials affirmed the raises for all county elected officials as proposed in a March meeting of the 10-member board.

    County council members will receive a 15 percent raise next year, bringing their part-time salary to $24,150 a year. The sheriff's raise will be 5.7 percent, to $126,155. Commission members perceived the sheriff as having more responsibilities in his position, considering he manages a larger number of employees and the jail. The commission used the Bellingham police chief's salary for comparison but kept the sheriff's salary below that.

  • County staff won't oversee Whatcom salary commission meetings

    The commission that will set the salaries of Whatcom County elected officials will meet away from county staff and offices in a move intended to ensure the group's independence.

    County Executive Jack Louws said on Thursday, Jan. 3, that he decided the Whatcom Transportation Authority will facilitate meetings of the Commission on Salaries for Elected Officials, rather than giving that work to a county department. The commission was created a year ago to establish salaries for the executive, council members, assessor, auditor, prosecuting attorney, sheriff and treasurer.

    "Anywhere I would put it within the county, there could be a perceived conflict of interest," Louws said.

  • Whatcom Salary Commission wants public input

    Whatcom County's first Commission on Salaries for Elected Officials met some of its subjects face to face at its meeting Wednesday, Feb. 27. Next it will hear from the public, on the way to setting the 2014-15 salaries for all county elected offices by May 1.

    Three county officials spoke at Wednesday's meeting - Assessor Keith Willnauer, Auditor Debbie Adelstein and Treasurer Steve Oliver. Two others, Sheriff Bill Elfo and Executive Jack Louws, sent written comments. No one from the County Council submitted comments.

    Those officeholders who did comment didn't stray far from a straightforward and thorough description of their duties. Almost all made a point of telling commissioners how many employees they supervise, from the 12 under the treasurer to the sheriff's staff of 204.

    Whatcom County Council members could get a 15 percent pay raise, and the prosecutor could overtake the executive to become the highest-paid elected county official in 2014.

    The county's Commission on Salaries for Elected Officials has proposed higher salaries for those offices and for sheriff, assessor, auditor and treasurer. The public can comment on the proposals at a hearing, 4 p.m. Thursday, April 18, in the Whatcom Transportation Authority boardroom, 4111 Bakerview Spur Road.
