Parenting classes being offered in Kennewick School District starting Jan. 29

The Kennewick School District is offering "Love and Logic" parenting classes.

Participants will learn practical tools to raise responsible children, according to the district.

Class discussions will focus on topics including responsibility and consequences for bad behavior.

The classes will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays from Jan. 29 to March 5.

There is a $10 workbook fee. Child care will be provided for free.

All classes will take place in the library at Sunset View Elementary, 711 Center Parkway, Kennewick.

    High school students in the Kennewick School District could have fewer early release days under a proposal being considered by district officials. However, the students would get out of class even sooner than they already do on those days.

  • Salmon Summit events Tuesday, Wednesday at Columbia Park

    KENNEWICK -- Thousands of students from around the Mid-Columbia will take over the east end of Columbia Park this week as part of the annual Salmon Summit.

    The event is sponsored by the Benton County Conservation District and organizers are expecting 120 classes to visit the park's east boat launch Tuesday and Wednesday to release salmon the students have raised in their classrooms, according to a release. They'll also participate in various educational activities in the park.

    The boat launch will be closed to the public both days from midnight to 3:30 p.m. The public still will be able to access the park but the road through the east end of the park will be closed from the east boat launch to the veterans memorial between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. each day. Barricades will be placed and there will be someone directing traffic.

  • More Mid-Columbia students found with weapons on campus

    More Mid-Columbia students were suspended or expelled in the 2011-12 school year for bringing a weapon to school, according to data provided to the Herald by eight school districts in the Tri-Cities and surrounding areas.

    Though no district had a large spike in the number of incidents, 170 students were suspended or expelled, about 40 more than in 2010-11, with the bulk of those involving knives or other non-firearm weapons.

    There were fewer incidents of guns being brought to class. Kennewick, with three, was the only district reporting a gun incident in 2011-12. Five incidents were reported in Kennewick and Richland the year before.
