An estimated 2,500 people gathered Monday to celebrate the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. during Tacoma’s 25th annual birthday celebration for the civil rights leader.

Zenaida Crisostomo Slemp of Puyallup joined her father’s military heritage organization years after his death. Something called out to her, telling her it was time to learn more about his past.
Friends of the late Gov. Booth Gardner gathered for his memorial service at the University of Puget Sound’s Memorial Fieldhouse on Saturday. Former Gov. Chris Gregoire choked back tears as she spoke and U.S. Rep. Denny Heck wiped his tears away as the crowd remembered the late governor.
The crowd chased tears of sorrow with tears of joy. They told stories, sang songs and hugged. It’s exactly what Tacoma firefighter Albert Nejmeh, 59, would have wanted at his memorial service.
