Firefighters quickly extinguished a fire Monday morning at Roger’s Rubber Manufacturing in Edgewood, according to a statement released by East Pierce County Fire & Rescue.

Employees called 911 shortly after 11 a.m. when they couldn’t put out the fire at 2810 Meridian Ave. E.

The fire engine at the station two blocks away was responding to another call, so East Pierce, Central Pierce and South King units responded.

Black smoke was billowing from the building when firefighters arrived, but they were able to douse the flames. Meridian was closed for about 30 minutes to protect hoses running across the street.

“We were lucky we caught it early,” East Pierce Battalion Chief Rick Goetz said in the prepared statement.

Two Roger’s employees were treated for smoke inhalation, but they did not require hospitalization. The cause of the fire was under investigation.
