Sen. Nathan Schlicher, D-Gig Harbor, assumed his duties as the state senator for the 26th Legislative District Monday when he was sworn into office at the Capitol.

A medical doctor, Schlicher was tapped by the Kitsap Board of Commissioners and the Pierce County Council to take the position vacated when state Sen. Derek Kilmer, D-Gig Harbor, was elected to Congress in November.

“It’s a high honor to represent our communities in Olympia and I am eager to get to work addressing the concerns of people throughout the district. I look at my new role as being a doctor to all — doing what I can to help our students, our families, and communities stay healthy and succeed,” said Schlicher.

Schlicher will serve on the Senate Health Care, Transportation and Trade & Economic Development committees.

Schlicher, 30, was born in Bremerton. He received his bachelor’s degree from Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma before graduating first law school, then medical school, both at the University of Washington.

He works in the Emergency Department at St. Joseph’s Medical Center, serving as a clinician in the department and associate director. He also serves nationally as the associate director of the Patient Safety Organization for TeamHealth. He lives with his wife, also a physician, and their two children, David and Juliette, in Gig Harbor.
