A man being held at the Thurston County Jail on a charge of second-degree murder is accused of punching a corrections deputy in the face Saturday during an altercation as two deputies tried to search his cell.
Jakob Curtis, 21, was booked at the jail on an additional charge of custodial assault. The deputy, who was treated at a hospital, was not seriously injured, Sheriff’s Lt. Greg Elwin said.
Curtis and another transient are charged with second-degree murder in connection with the Oct. 12 stabbing death of 37-year-old Matthew Samlock. Samlock, also a transient, was found stabbed in the chest on a sidewalk off Cooper Point Road, and he died at the scene. Curtis also is charged with first-degree robbery for allegedly stealing a bottle of whiskey from Rite Aid on Cooper Point Road and hitting a Rite Aid employee in the head with a liquor bottle.
During Saturday’s reported altercation, two corrections deputies had entered Curtis’ cell to search for contraband. Curtis refused to let the deputies handcuff him and punched one “in the nose twice with a closed fist,” court papers state.
Curtis has refused to give deputies a statement about what happened Saturday, Elwin said.
